You buy a new brand of skin care, and it’s great. It feels lovely, it smells beautiful, you enjoy using it and best of all, you can see a difference in the quality of your skin. Now fast forward 6 to 12 months –you’re still using the product as per instructions, it still smells and feels good, but you’re not seeing the results you want. This is a common scenario, which most of us will encounter at some time, and there are a number of possible causes.

1.You are using the wrong products.

While it is convenient to pick up products from the supermarket, it is not always a good idea. Cheaper products can only be cheaper because they have smaller concentrations of expensive active ingredients. This strategy is not only to cut costs, but also because the products are targeted at a mass market. As supermarket customers self select product with very little information, it is also to ensure that the reactions to the products ingredients are minimised. Unfortunately this also means that the benefits are also minimised.

Unfortunately, the problem of ineffective products is not unique to cheaper brands, and it is very easy to buy a lovely and expensive imported product that is totally unsuited to the Australian climate (and please don’t get me started on ludicrous ingredients like pearl dust, gold and caviar!!! )

2.Your skin is not being challenged –

I know that sounds strange, but the skin is your body’s largest organ, and if you are using good quality active products, they don’t just provide nutrition to the skin; they change how your skin behaves.

Think of your skin care as an exercise routine – if you do the same all the time your body gets used to it and the results diminish over time. The answer to this problem is to mix it up.

Many ranges have “booster” products such as light peels, or extra care products for harsh climatic conditions. The best thing you can do if you find your salon products aren’t doing it for you any more is contact the salon and seek advice.

The therapists, who are working with their ranges every day, are well aware of this problem and are best placed to offer you advice. Often the solution is as simple as the occasional use of a booster product or some in salon treatments. – far cheaper than changing your whole regime, although quite a few of our clients keep products from two ranges and alternate them when necessary. .

Dealing with unwanted facial and body hair is a problem that is at best annoying, and at its worst is expensive, painful, and ineffective.
To get the best results from hair removal methods, you need to consider what type of hair you want to remove, where it is located and, depending on the method being used, the texture of and colour the hair.
Shaving
The least invasive method of temporary hair removal is shaving. Contrary to what many people believe, shaving does nothing to make the hair darker or more coarse – all shaving does is reduce the length of the hair (just like a haircut), without making any difference to how the hair grows. The common misconception about the effects of shaving are due to the fact that all hair fades a little when exposed to light, and when recently cut, the hair has a sharp edge which softens over a few days. Apart from the risk of nicks and cuts, the main disadvantages of shaving are it has has to be done very regularly, is time consuming and can increase the incidence of ingrown hairs.
Tweezing
Using tweezers is a good option for a small amount of hair, although long term tweezing can result in skin irritations, ingrown hairs and infections. If you are tweezing, never be tempted to try to remove the hair until it is above the surface of the skin and you can comfortably grip the hair shaft with the tweezers.
Waxing
Waxing is a very popular method of temporary hair removal, as it is relatively inexpensive and for most people delivers a relatively long lasting result, depending on how fast your hair grows. Like most methods, ingrown hairs can be a problem for some people as the hair, weakened by waxing is l less able to push through the skin
Sugaring
Sugaring has been used in some parts of the world for centuries, but has only recently become a main stream hair removal method. The technique is similar to waxing, but the main difference is the smaller molecule size of the sugaring paste, which allows it to penetrate the follicle. As a result it actually clears out the follicle, reducing the incidence of ingrown hairs, as well as delivering a longer lasting and better result.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis was the first truly permanent hair removal method, and predates other permanent methods by decades. It works well on all hair colours of hair. Like other permanent solutions, it can only kill the hair in one stage of the hair growth cycle, so multiple treatments are required.
Electrolysis is a hair by hair treatment, and can be uncomfortable, but is still the only effective and affordable treatment for pale or grey hair .It is best used on smaller areas.
Light Based Treatments
Laser and Intense Pulsed Light treatments are now the best options for permanent removal of hair. There is still some confusion for consumers about which is better but both do pretty much the same job. More important is whether the machine has adequate client cooling, the amount of experience the operator has whether they do a thorough consultation, whether they do a test patch.
For most people IPL and laser treatments are perfectly safe and very effective. However, it is probably best to avoid going to a clinic that suggests or insist that you buy unnecessary after care products or suggests that you will need a maintenance program.
